Sans traitement, elle est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement mortelle, selon l&rsquo;OMS. Elle se transmet \u00e0 l&rsquo;homme par les piq\u00fbres de mouches ts\u00e9-ts\u00e9 qui ont contract\u00e9 le parasite Trypanosoma brucei \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;humains ou d&rsquo;animaux infect\u00e9s.Le parasite peut traverser la barri\u00e8re h\u00e9mato-enc\u00e9phalique et atteindre le syst\u00e8me nerveux central. C&rsquo;est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que les sympt\u00f4mes apparaissent: changements de comportement, confusion, troubles sensoriels et mauvaise coordination. Les troubles du cycle du sommeil, qui donnent son nom \u00e0 la maladie, sont une caract\u00e9ristique importante.Outre le Kenya, les autres pays ayant \u00e9limin\u00e9 la maladie du sommeil en tant que probl\u00e8me de sant\u00e9 publique sont le B\u00e9nin, la C\u00f4te d&rsquo;Ivoire, le Ghana, la Guin\u00e9e, la Guin\u00e9e \u00e9quatoriale, l&rsquo;Ouganda, le Rwanda, le Tchad et le
